Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung:

Migration is a theme of mayor importance: At the same time that Germany is slowly accepting being a country of immigration, it is experiencing its highest emigration since the end of Second World War, according to the expert Klaus Bade.

The media has reacted to this development producing dozens of documentaries and “reality” programming about this subject matter, a sample of which we will analyze from an interdisciplinary perspective in this seminar, asking questions such as: What imagery of migration do these formats render? Who migrates into Germany, why and with which consequences for both, the immigrant and the hosting society? Who are the new German emigrants and how are their chances for success in another country? Are there patterns of difference between the characteristics given to Germans moving abroad and those assigned to foreigners coming into Germany? Who "constructs” these images, by which methods, with what purpose and results?

We will evaluate contents specifically designed for movie theaters as well as some of those created for public and commercial networks. The analysis of argumentative styles will be also introduced, by means of which we will attempt to identify, for example, some of the colonial, neocolonial and postcolonial discourses presented in a number of these formats.

Although this seminar builds up on the interdisciplinary analysis we did during this past summer semester in the "Migration in Film I: Crossing the Border" seminar, newcomers can join the group if they are willing to read, before the starting of classes, two short introductory essays that will be posted in Digicampus. The final papers can be written either in English or in German language. Additionally, the willingness to work in groups, to watch in advance the films/programs we will be analyzing and to use simple image editing techniques are required.
