Proseminar/Übung: Civilization, Theatre, and American Drama

Dozentin: Christina Caupert M.A.
Termin: Di. 14.00-15.30 Uhr
8017 (BCM)

In this course, we will try to account for the long-lasting success of the theatre by looking into its (possible) origins and functions. We will study a number of prominent theoretical approaches to the genre and review some of the ideas put forward by Aristotle, Nietzsche, Brecht, and others. To test the usefulness and persuasive power of their suggestions, and to put them into dialogue with specific cultural contexts and aesthetic practices, our theoretical readings will be complemented by detailed discussions of literary examples; the often-posed question of the relationship between theatre and drama will thus also be raised in this course. Time and equipment permitting, we will round off our activities with analyses of scenes from selected stage performances.
The course can be attended as a Proseminar or an Übung.
