K "Analysis of Literary Texts (Prose Fiction)"

Dozent(in): Christina Caupert, M.A.
Termin: Mittwoch 14:00-15:30 Uhr
Gebäude/Raum: 1089

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung:

This course is aimed at refreshing and enlarging the participants’ knowledge of central categories of prose fiction SSlaughterhouse-Five lanalysis such as author, narrator, reader, the narrative construction of time and space, ways of establishing fictional characters or techniques for describing the characters’ inner lives (e.g. free indirect discourse, interior monologue, stream of consciousness). The course will give an outline of various theoretical concepts, but the greatest emphasis will be placed on actively working on literary texts. Thus, the timely reading of all assigned texts, i.e. Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five and a reader with novel excerpts and short fiction, will be expected.

The analysis of prose fiction is one of the five major areas relevant to literary studies (prose, drama, poetry, film, and literary theory) and is offered once every year. This course is designed for all students of English and American Studies, and specifically for those training to be teachers. Students should have attended these five courses before they register for their final exams.
