HS "Ethics and American Individualism: Cultural Ideology and Literary Transformations" (Kompaktseminar Sion, Ethik der Textkulturen)

Dozent(in): Prof. Dr. Hubert Zapf / Prof. Dr. John Burt / Prof. Dr. Stephen Whitfield (beide Brandeis University)
Termin: 9.-16. Juli 2006

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung:

This seminar, which will be co-taught by Profs. Steve Whitfield and John Burt (both Brandeis University) and myself, is part of the new elite study program 'Ethics of Textual Cultures', which will start in the summer semester of 2006. However, a limited number of students who are not participants in the elite program can also be admitted. On the syllabus of the course will be some of the major writers of American literature who have contributed in significant ways to the discourse of American individualism: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Kate Chopin, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Robert Penn Warren, and others. Special emphasis will be placed on the ways in which the texts critically examine and imaginatively explore the ethical dimensions of individualism as a distinctive feature of American culture.
