Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung:

Since the beginning of the 20th Century film directors ranging from the classics – such as Charles Chaplin, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Michael Cimino or Luchino Visconti – all the way to a younger generation – among which we can count Joseph Mathew, Michael Winterbottom, Ulrich Seidel and Fatih Akin – have presented their own visions of what it is, and what it takes, to build a new life in a different society as that of origin. Departing from the concept that films can be read as a text, in this course we will examine several fictional films whose main subject is migra-tion. Selected European and American movies will be analyzed and interpreted in an interdiscipli-nary manner, combining medial, historical and social-anthropological approaches. The objective is to try to understand: How has the process of migration itself been represented in feature films?

How have the immigrants and their motivations been depicted? What kind of challenges and op-portunities do they appear to find in the society of reception? To which degree do movies give evidence of the advancement of a society towards a multicultural environment?

This course will engage you in examining the social, political and economic factors influencing migration movements, as well as raise your critical awareness and consciousness about the ex-periences of people who migrate. Some of the issues we will examine include chain migration, the creation of myths and stereotypes, women immigrants, political asylum, illegal border crossing, racism, networks and transmigration. Designed as an interdisciplinary course, an introduction to film analysis and to migration research will be offered at the beginning. The course is, therefore, appropriate for beginners as well as for senior students. A second part, dedicated to the analysis of migration in documentary films and television series, is planned for the winter semester 2009/2010.
