Welcome to the Department of English and American Studies!


The Department of English and American Studies at Augsburg University is one of the best in Germany. Rankings regularly confirm this and identify as particular strengths the department’s diverse course offerings, close links with ongoing research, job market preparation, excellent student-faculty relations, well-equipped library, possibilities for e-learning, and wide array of study-abroad opportunities.

The department offers Bachelor's, Master's, and Teacher Training (Lehramt) programs in English and American studies.

The lectures and seminars on both undergraduate and graduate levels in our various areas of study cover a wide variety of periods and topics, allowing students to define their course of study individually. Moreover, visiting scholars enrich the spectrum of classes offered each semester with seminars and guest lectures.

Alongside tuition in the students’ chosen majors, it is a pivotal goal of the department to create opportunities for students to integrate interdisciplinary work into their studies. Therefore, the Department of English and American Studies participates in the elite program Ethik der Textkulturen (The Ethics of Textual Cultures), as well as the interdisciplinary master’s programs North American Studies, Application-Oriented Intercultural Linguistics (website in German) and International Literature (pdf in German). Cross-disciplinary topics in seminars and cooperation between different departments are important elements in our own programs as well

In addition, students of English and American Studies are strongly encouraged to make use of the available opportunities to spend time abroad in the course of their studies. A stay abroad can take various forms and students may opt for either a semester abroad as a student at a partner university, a year as a foreign language assistant through PAD, or an internship abroad.
