PS "The Sonnet"

Dozent(in): Timo Müller, M.A.
Termin: Donnerstag 14-15.30 Uhr
Gebäude/Raum: 1003

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung:

This course offers a survey of the sonnet from Wyatt to present-day American poetry. After a thorough study of foundational texts from the Renaissance period (Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare), we will trace the development of this extraordinarily long-lived and productive form through the seventeenth century and the Romantic period to America. In the American literary tradition, the sonnet reappears with a surprising regularity: it was popular not only with nineteenth-century 'genteel' poets such as Longfellow and Lowell but with many of the leading representatives of modern and postmodern poetry as well. A special session will be devoted to the sonnet in the African-American tradition.

Participants will be expected to prepare five to eight poems for each session. Additional information on this course can be found on the Amerikanistik website (Lehre / Internetbegleitung).
