An extensive tour through the world of London's contemporary theatre and drama, designed especially for students working on a theatre-related MA or PhD project at a university in mainland Europe.

Announcing JCDE: Journal for Contemporary Drama in English, an international journal published by De Gruyter with CDE from 2013!

The Journal of Contemporary Drama in English focuses on issues in contemporary Anglophone dramatic literature and theatre performance. It renegotiates the understanding of contemporary aesthetics of drama and theatre by treating dramatic texts of the last fifty years. The peer-reviewed journal publishes essays that engage in close readings of plays and also touch upon historical, political, formal, theoretical and methodological aspects of contemporary drama, theatre, and performance. JCDE will appear twice a year: Volume one will be a special issue based on the annual international conferences held by CDE Society, volume two invites individual essays on contemporary theatre and drama in English. CDE Award 2012: CDE invites submissions for the CDE Award 2012 for outstanding research in the field of contemporary theatre and drama in English. Only recent
work - Dr/PhD theses or post-doctoral theses (Habilitationsschriften) completed in 2010 and 2011 - will be considered for the prize (up to EUR 2,500). Deadline for submissions: December 31, 2011.

CALL FOR PAPERS on contemporary Irish drama (special issue of Breac: A Digital Journal of Irish Studies): In the past twenty years Irish society has experienced a range of cultural, political and, centrally, financial upheaval. To what extent has Irish theatre responded to these tumultuous events? How far have traditional forms and subjects maintained their position? Or have experiment and innovation become the new distinguishing features? The guest editors of this special issue of Breac, Lindsay Haney and Shaun Richards, invite submissions addressing any aspect of recent Irish drama. In keeping with Breac's interdisciplinary goals and digital form, we encourage submissions informed by any approach to drama and theatre and rendered as conventional essays or works in any audio or visual medium.
Submissions are to have a length of 4000-5000 words, but the editors wil happily consider longer articles. Deadline is July 15, 2013. More information on the CFP and full submission instructions are available at breac.nd.edu/submissions. Questions to .

New Drama Online platform is released: Bloomsbury Publishing and Faber and Faber are pleased to announce the delivery of a major new content platform, Drama Online (www.dramaonlinelibrary.com) for higher education libraries, educators, students and researchers. Students and lecturers can now access hundreds of plays and reference works in the same cross-searchable place, wider reading lists can be set and whole new methods of academic discovery and enquiry can be made.
Conceived four years ago, Drama Online features the pre-eminent plays and scholarly works from the Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare and Faber lists, to form a major collection of some of the most studied, performed and critically acclaimed plays from Aeschylus to the present day. Currently available in beta with more than five hundred titles already available, the collection is set to double in size by the end of the year to include over a thousand works.
In addition to the plays, hundreds of supporting scholarly, reference and practitioner works provide context and background for Drama, Theatre and Literary Studies courses. A partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum allows the discovery of over five hundred production stills from the V & A's vast theatre photo archive.

CALL FOR PAPERS on Radical Contemporary Theatre Practices by Women in Ireland (edited volume): This prospective collection seeks to include papers and interviews which analyse and discuss the role of women in the changing shifts across the field of contemporary Irish theatre-making, South and North. Areas of interest for the volume are (but not limited to) innovative theatre practices by women in the respective work of
– practitioners, directors, designers and/or actresses
– playwrights (Nancy Harris, Stella Feehily, Geraldine Aron, Ursula Rani Sarma, Trudy Hayes, Deirdre Hines, Emma Donoghue, Maria Connolly, Deirdre Kinahan, etc.) and/or collaborative groups
– performance artists and solo performers
– communal theatre programmes and events
Proposals of 300-400 words for essays or interviews of 4000-6000 words, accompanied by a short bio (max. 100 words) of the author(s), should be sent to the editors, Dr Miriam Haughton () and Prof Mária Kurdi (). - CALL FOR PAPERS for the international symposium "Ravenhill Now: 21st Century Mark Ravenhill", to be held at the University of Lincoln on 23 March 2013 - confirmed keynote speaker: Mark Ravenhill: This one-day symposium takes place at the end of a weeklong Mark Ravenhill Festival. Discussion will be focused around the significance of Ravenhill's work in the 21st century. Papers may focus on topics such as: dysfunctionality; gender and/or sexuality; sexuality and violence; the continuing relevance (or not) of 'in-yer-face' conceptualisations of Ravenhill's work; new forms/new dramaturgies; satire; political subjectivities; nation/war/terrorism; ecology; the significance of affect; new theoretical approaches to Ravenhill's work; and performing Ravenhill. - Please email 200-300 word proposals for 20 minute papers and brief biographical notes to Dr Siân Adiseshiah (). Ideally, Carysfort Press would like two editors per collection, and again ideally, one of the editors should have some experience in working on collections of essays. In the first instance, please contact Eamonn Jordan () for an initial informal chat if you are interested. Later, formal proposals will be requested. Ideally, the collections will be peer reviewed and the editors need to put that process in train.

- Theatre goes digital! The Routledge Performance Archive (www.routledgeperformancearchive.com) is a new resource produced in partnership with Digital Theatre to provide access to a wide range of audio-visual material from past and present practitioners of performance. The video material spans more than fifty years of documented work direct from practitioners and specialists, and ranges across the entire spectrum of theatre topics. The resource is a paid service, but the site offer a free trial. The London Evening Standard has a review.
- Just published: In honour of former CDE President Werner Huber's birthday, the festschrift Ireland in Drama, Film, and Popular Culture (edited by Sandra Mayer, Julia Novak, and Margarete Rubik) has just been published with Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier. Contributors include Michael Raab, José Lanters, Martin Middeke, Mark Berninger, Heinz Kosok, Hedwig Schwall, Mark Schreiber, Seán Crosson, Dawn Duncan, Eckart Voigts-Virchow, Alison O'Malley-Younger, John Strachan, Dieter Fuchs, Monika Seidl, and Clare Wallace. - "Between Bodies/Bodies Between": International conference to be held at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, 5 - 6 April 2013: The conference engages bodies and embodiment in literature and the humanities, seeking to survey the state of scholarship and future directions after over a decade of groundbreaking work. The organizers particularly welcome papers that consider the body in its liminality or interactions between bodies, and papers that consider the body in relation to Ireland. Invited plenaries are Francis O'Gorman (Leeds), Vike Plock (Exeter) and Moynagh Sullivan (NUIM). To propose a 20 minute paper (or a panel), contact . - The peer-reviewed international journal Parole Rubate / Purloined Letters: An International Journal of Quotation Studies invites proposals for contributions concerning the theory and practice of quotation. Pursuing an essentially interdisciplinary approach, the journal publishes articles on the textual re-use of verbal, visual and musical materials, and specifically the appropriation of fragments and their re-insertion into a different context, from classicism to postmodern writings.
